Business Spotlight: Trinidad
Blue Crate

Two years ago Blue Crate founder, Chad Newman, and fellow principals, Tyler Johnston and John Butler, joined forces to explore the possibility of establishing a wholesale home furnishing business with merchandise from across the globe. After an initial buying trip to some of the most remote regions on earth, they found a great deal of interest in their unique pieces of hand-knotted wool carpets, rustic country furnishings and one-of-a-kind architectural accessories. This summer the business has grown to include a retail store at the corner of Animas and Main, making their diverse offerings available to the public.

Having lived in China for seven of the past eleven years, Chad taught in universities, traveled extensively, became fluent in Mandarin, and honed his eye for small and large objects that are both uniquely interesting and functional. With his wife, Yoon, and baby Anna Grace, Chad’s able to uncover classic pieces in addition to those rarely seen in the western world. Instead of relying on agents to do their buying, each piece is hand selected by the Newmans, insuring quality, authenticity and value. In fact, many of the items are bought first-hand, directly from villages where foreigners have never before set foot. These pieces are then carefully refurbished by a professional staff to add modern functionality to the original rustic beauty.

Blue Crate now offers the most unique collections of furniture, hand-knotted rugs, jewelry, accessories, and home furnishings from the Mongolian, Tibetan, and Mandarin cultures. Additionally, Blue Crate is able to serve as a custom resource to anyone seeking specialty items from remote areas.

Their specialty remains simple rustic pieces with exceptional wood and/or unique folk painting; pieces that can be easily blended into any decor to accentuate a room without dominating it. If you are looking for an entire setting for a room or just a unique gift, come by and see what Blue Crate has to offer.
