| Jim and Cindy Wheeler, natives of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, discovered southern Colorado while on a road trip to Seattle, Washington. They fell in love with the Black Hawk Ranch area just south of Walsenburg and purchased acreage, then continued on to Seattle looking for additional property - but none compared. |

After a week in the Northwest, the couple was homesick ... not for Louisiana, but Colorado. So on their way back, they stopped to ask some of the local people they met previously;
"What type of business does Walsenburg need most?" The overwhelming answer was a donut shop.
After careful, but quick planning, the Wheelers opened the Spanish Peaks Donut, Deli & Sweets shop in June of 1999. It's a donut shop, a deli full of fresh meats, cut to your preference, and a bakery with fresh cakes, pies and breads. Stop by from 6am to 3pm, Monday - Saturday.
But Jim and Cindy weren't done just yet! Last December the couple decided it was time for Walsenburg to experience some authentic Cajun cuisine, so they opened the Cajun Cafe and Steakhouse.
They offer a menu of spicy appetizers, sandwiches, marinated steaks, along with a full soup and salad bar from open to close. The most recent addition to the menu is spicy crawfish, boiled fresh every Friday. Currently open from 11am to 2pm for lunch, then again from 4 to 8:30pm Monday thru Saturday, with plans to expand their hours this summer. Stop by for the food, but stay for the entertainment with live music six nights a week from blues to folk, and on Tuesday nights it's an Open-Jam. There's something for everyone so,
"Ya'll come and laissez les bons temps roule" (let the good times roll).
