Caring for the Community - Spanish Peaks Healthcare Foundation

In a progressive move to better serve the community, Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center in Walsenburg has re-established the Spanish Peaks HealthCare Foundation.

Spanish Peaks Regional Heath Center

Its mission is to support the vision and goals of Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center through fund development, community outreach, and health education to meet the health care needs and improve the health status of Huerfano County residents, with special attention to those most at risk. John Davis, DVM, foundation board president, spearheaded the vision to have a separate office with a convenient downtown location. The office is staffed by Kari Harp, Executive Director, Sandy Dolak, Community Resources Coordinator, and Lynette Omer, Administrative Assistant. As part of its mission, the Foundation has been aggressively seeking grants to fund various pieces of medical equipment and programs related to the health center. Since April of last year, $267,000 has been raised to fund such projects as a new mammography machine, a surgical C-arm unit, a Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) outreach program, and a dental clinic for Medicaid/CHP+ children. Monies were also raised to purchase a new wheelchair- accessible van for the veterans at the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home and to create a Community Resource Center in downtown Walsenburg.

The Community Resource Center, located at 601 S. Albert, is operated by the foundation staff and open to local non-profits for daytime or evening meeting space. Computer, Internet, fax and copier services are also available to local non-profits free of charge. In addition, the staff is available to assist with grant searches and to offer grant writing technical assistance.

The Foundation is actively involved in bringing new health services to the county and surrounding region. Its projects include returning hospice to Huerfano County and coordinating the annual "9 News Health Fair" held last month at the TSJC campus in Walsenburg. If you're interested in learning more about the Foundation, would like help in researching grants, or prefer to volunteer for events such as the Health Fair, please call the office at 738-2718.
