Local Business: The Art of Healing

Two and a half years ago, Judy Gearhart and husband Gerry, both Colorado natives, uprooted themselves from their home and Judy's practice in Boulder County to live "where they wanted to be" - in Huerfano County. After all, they had been visiting family here for 12 years. Judy had a myotherapy practice in Boulder County since 1989, after attending the Bonnie Prudden School of Myotherapy and completing an internship in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She later attended Upledger, a school for cranial sacral therapy.

Myotherapy is an effective and unique way of relieving pain, loss of range of motion, and even swelling, without drugs or needles. It was developed by Bonnie Prudden in the late 70's and has been successful in treating many types of pain including headaches, carpal tunnel syndrome, shoulder, knee, foot, back pain, and even TMJD, a severe jaw disorder. The therapy works deep in the key trigger points in the muscles, thus relaxing the trigger point and re-educate it with corrective or therapeutic exercise. Therapy is applied with knuckles, elbows and thumbs. Judy works with referrals from medical doctors, chiropractors, naturopaths, nurses and physical therapists. Her myotherapy career started when husband Gerry was diagnosed with anklyosing spondilitis, a rare form of arthritis. They were told he'd be in a wheel chair in 5-8 years. After two or three years of frustration and high doses of drugs, a nurse gave Judy a book called Pain Erasure by Bonnie Prudden. She began working on Gerry and saw instant results. Within two years she had attended school and started a new, satisfying career. "It's tremendously satisfying to help people relieve their pain so they can function again." Bonnie Prudden says, "Pain, not years, age you.  We can teach patients to work on themselves and spouses or friends, so they don't have to keep coming back. We are currently offering a free 30-minute consultation." Her office is located in Navajo Ranch, between Walsenburg and La Veta, off Highway 160. She also teaches exercise classes and is available for seminars and talks on myotherapy.
