Business Spotlight: Raton
We Are Family - Medina Builders

It's a business about family! In 1992 Medina Builders was incorporated by Simon Medina and his sons, Kerry, Stevie and Lonny. Simon originally started working in the construction industry in Raton over 40 years ago. As Kerry, Stevie and Lonny were growing up, Simon taught them many of the skills they are still using today. Their situation is unique for this area, as most small building contractors have only one owner to manage a crew, bid on projects, pay bills, do bookkeeping and meet with customers. At Medina Builders it’s a family business, as Simon, Kerry and Stevie do the actual construction, meet with clients and bid on projects, while Kay Medina handles the bookkeeping and Lonny, as a certified public account, manages all the tax and financial matters of the business.

Being lifelong residents of Raton, they've learned that living and working in a smaller town like Raton, there just isn't enough work to specialize in any one area of the industry. In order to stay competitive in the building business you've got to be willing to gain the knowledge and skill to do just about any job at any time. Early on, the Medinas took opportunities to work for other contractors and learn various skills before deciding to go into business for themselves. Those individual experiences allowed the family members to acquire a more diversified set of trade skills. Therefore, they sublet very little work out to others because they have the experience and tools to do almost every stage of building construction such as concrete work, framing, drywall, tile, linoleum, decks, stucco, roofing, custom casework, seamless gutters and finish work.

Recent remodeling jobs include the former Elm Street Station (currently Ornery Dottie’s) in Trinidad, Shield's Surveying Office in Raton and Medina Builders/Farmers Insurance Office in Raton. They have also finished a couple of the new commercial buildings: the Service Organization for Youth (SOY) building and the Miner's Colfax Medical Center warehouse in Raton. In addition, the Medinas are also capable of constructing new custom homes from the ground up. Their willingness to change and try new things has recently led them into other business opportunities. Most recently they built and operate the only self-storage units on the north side of Raton and have become certified to install the heleptical deep-pier system. This economical pier system is used in conjunction with cement foundations when the ground is too wet and unstable for conventional foundations.
This system can also be used to lift or stabilize foundations that are sinking.

The Medinas believe their years of experience and industry knowledge, as well as their willingness to learn new skills, will allow the family to remain successful for many years to come.
