Artists at Work
Mannie's Shop

Just off Commercial Street in a busy shop in Trinidad works master woodcarver, Manuel Sanchez. Every day Mannie's Shop hums with activity as one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture, architectural details, carousel horses and other extraordinary items are carefully carved and crafted by hand. Owner, Manuel Sanchez, has spent a lifetime honing his skills by designing and creating truly beautiful, functional art pieces in many styles. His designs include everything from Southwest to the most intricate and delicate Chippendale pieces, which he favors most. He creates both interior and exterior items working in wood, stone or marble. His hand-carved doors are exceptional pieces of art that need to be seen to be believed. Mannie's Shop will soon start on the very first circus wagon to be produced in this country in the last 60 years. The excitement in the shop is palpable as everyone involved is excited about being part of such a historic undertaking.

Mannie has studied with master carvers in San Francisco, Chicago, Denver and Indianapolis. He has mastered the techniques and his skills have been recognized with a certification as a Master Woodcarver from the Voss School of Woodcarving in Norway. He loves his work, and it shows in the fine detail and exquisite finishing of his pieces. He often makes his own tools to create interesting effects.

In addition, he's working hard at this time to acquire funding necessary to establish a school to teach woodcarving so that future generations can practice and enjoy the beautiful creations that only handcarving can produce. His work can be seen in Trinidad at the Trinidad Brewing Company, the Las Animas County Commissioner's Chambers, and several private residences in the area. If you wish to see a true master craftsman at work, and marvel at his art forms, just stop by Mannie's shop; visitors are always welcome.
