| There's a new company in
Trinidad — DHD Performance Incorporated. Born out of the dreams of the Smith
family, DHD Performance has the latest in engine technology and CNC machines for
re-building all makes and models of car, truck, motorcycle and hot rod engines.
Owner, David Smith, has numerous years of experience in the racing industry and
over 20 years in the custom machining world. With the encouragement of his
family, the Trinidad-Las Animas County Economic Development Board, and local
businesses, David's dream of owning and operating his own business became a
reality. Housed in a brand new 3,200-square-foot building located in the
Trinidad Industrial Park at exit 18 is a state-of-the-art engine re-building
facility. David already has a national reputation in the field of engine
re-building and was recently awarded a contract by Maloy Racing, Inc. for their
new SCCA class racing engine. He has also become an importer/distributor for a
high-performance engine head from Australia.

Timing is everything when starting a new business; and according
to David, “There is a definite need in the area for this type of service.
Businesses and residents of Las Animas and Colfax counties would prefer to bring
their automotive and motorcycle engines to a local company who can re-build them
in a timely fashion, for a reasonable price. For the hot rod and car enthusiasts
out there, they need to get the performance they demand.”
David adds, “We moved to Trinidad five years ago because we
fell in love with the area and its friendly people. We built our home on 40
acres, and raised four children here — Randy, DJ, Joelle are all back in
Denver, but our youngest, Jessica, is still in school. Then, two years ago, my
wife Helena started her own New York Life Insurance Company Agency so now it’s
time to do my own thing.”

Fate and determination played a major role in starting this
business. “When my previous employer, Vance and Hines, decided to leave
Trinidad, I had to decide what I was going to do. We’re settled here so after
a few nerve-racking weeks, we felt Trinidad has so much to offer and we should
just start up our own shop.
And now, six months later, here we are.” Currently, with four
employees and an impressive array of fourteen new machines, DHD Performance is
ready to serve the engine re-building needs of Southern Colorado and Northern
New Mexico.
