Artisans: Trinidad
Rich in Art - Corazon Gallery

East on Main Street from the First National Bank building and across the street from the A. R. Mitchell Museum dwells the Corazon Gallery, the longest established local art gallery in Trinidad. As the public face of the Trinidad Art League, this cooperative gallery exhibits art by 25 professional artists and craftspeople, all of whom live and work in the Trinidad area. A requirement of exhibiting members is to “man” the desk two days a month, so visitors come in personal contact with the artists themselves and have the opportunity to learn firsthand about the art on display.

In the Corazon Gallery, visitors will find a large variety of media from traditional to contemporary — including paintings, pottery, sculpture, fabric art, jewelry, stained glass — plus a room of teas and tea accessories, and another room containing unique women's clothing. In accordance with the Trinidad Art League's mission to encourage local art and art appreciation, the Art League holds several shows every year, which are open to area artists at large. Additionally, every three months the Gallery mounts a new theme show, and each month one of the Gallery members is highlighted as “Artist of the Month.” Each April the Art League hosts the TALAS (Trinidad Area Local Artists' Show), a juried and judged show in which artists from all over Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico compete for prize monies exceeding $1,200.

Another event held every September is the annual Critter Show, where all manner of animals, lifelike and whimsical, are represented. Over Thanksgiving, the Art League sponsors a two-day Arts and Crafts Fair at the Gallery, with local craftspeople exhibiting products suitable for Christmas gift giving. Likewise, during December, there is a special exhibit of fine art gifts under $100.

Visitors will always find a selection of “Big City Art at Small Town Prices” and a warm welcome from the artists at the Corazon Gallery in Trinidad — the Little Taos of Colorado.
