Artist at Work: Weston, CO
Creating Art in 3-D - Petri Studios

He’s an exciting addition to the diverse list of Las Animas County artisans. Barry Petri brings with him 35 years of experience as a professional metal sculptor and fine jeweler. Owner of an integrated foundry, metal fabrication and studio facilities, Barry holds a national record of achievement in architectural sculpture, iron, and bronze work.

Working closely with clients and the site specifics, Barry infuses his inspiration from nature with both traditional and contemporary designs to create his metalwork. Often combining mediums, he produces one-of-a-kind pieces of functional art. It may be a stairway or an entryway, but each project is truly a signed work of art!

His background includes restoration of heroic bronzes for the City of Colorado Springs, the El Pomar Foundation, the Dept. of the Army, and the City of Costa Mesa, California. It seemed a natural progression to add bronze conservation to the list of his many talents, and he offers this rare service to private collectors and municipalities. His education and research of the arts has led him to become a master of three-dimensional art, specializing in metal casting and fabrication. His gold and silver jewelry, which can be seen in galleries both locally and nationally, is a culmination of years of developing his Southwestern and contemporary designs. His originality in incorporating early American influences into his work is a strong signature of his unique style, and cherished by many collectors. “I love working with stones, and have been a long-time collector of rugs and weaving from around the world, which has influenced me greatly in my geometric designs. We do most of our own lapidary, which allows me to select unique pieces of stone for unusual custom work.”

Currently teaching, sculpting, making jewelry, and undertaking commission work, he looks forward to serving more of our local needs. His wife and partner, Joel, says, “I've never seen him turn down a challenge, be it large or small.” She’s an integral part of the business details, design, and jewelry, adding, “It's a rare and romantic thing, to be able to work so well, and so closely, with your partner.”
Over the years, Barry has often collaborated with other artists and associates to accomplish a project, and finds it exciting to have the additional perspective and skills. His excellence in modern techniques and attention to detail assures his collector will receive the highest quality workmanship available today. Feel free to contact him for an estimate or a request for information and he'll send you his portfolio on CD disk, or purchase his jewelry pieces locally at Curiosities in downtown Trinidad.
