| Woody's Furniture will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year as a full- service furniture, appliance
and floor-covering store providing brand names in the mid-price ranges. Originally named Modern Electric in 1946, the
store started as an appliance retailer owned and operated by Wendell and Katherine Woodworth. In 1969, their son Howard
and his wife Carol moved to Raton from Denver to manage the store. Over the next five years, Woody's expanded into
furniture and floor covering, then moved to its present location at 139 S. 2nd in Raton. Today Howard has pulled back from day-to-day operations of the store and Janis Powledge is now store
manager. She's worked at Woody’s for 24 years beginning as the bookkeeper, then expanding into sales and management. Lex
Sisneros, who has been at Woody’s for five years, helps Janis with both sales and the administrative functions.
Meanwhile, Eugene Pacheco and Derek Theobald both help with sales and distribution. Although they are independent
craftsmen, both Curley Montoya and Richard Johnson have a close working relationship with the store by installing carpet
for Woody’s customers over the years.
Brand names carried by Woody’s include Ashley, Simmons, General Electric, Maytag, Mohawk, Shaw and Lane.
When choosing brands the main criterion is customer value. Woody’s chooses not only industry leaders, but companies who
provide the greatest service to smaller towns and their customers. Today, Woodworth considers the loyal customer base
acquired over 60 years its number one asset, followed closely by a talented and experienced staff. One form of service
which Woody’s is dedicated to providing is free delivery. Customers in Trinidad and the surrounding area have learned to
depend on seeing their delivery truck in their area every Tuesday and Friday. They are just as consistent in serving the
New Mexico towns of Maxwell, Springer, and Cimarron every Thursday. Giving back to the community is an important belief
at Woody’s. Woodworth serves on the boards of Raton MainStreet, Inc., Raton Arts Council, Raton Museum, Raton Community
Development Association, Raton Choral Society, and the Santa Fe Trail School for the Performing Arts. Remember, when
it's time for a household makeover, visit with the good people at Woody's. Store hours are: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m.
to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. |
