Business Feature: Raton
Watch it Strip - Furniture Facelifts at Finish Line Antiques

Chuck and JoHanna Hill of Raton, New Mexico are proud to announce there's a new “stripper” in town. Dolly's her name, and she's a very unique stripping machine. She operates much like a giant dishwasher, but instead of soap and water, she uses a very fine, cold mist spray of a specially formulated chemical that is recycled throughout the stripping process. When asked the question, “What kinds of things can be stripped?” Chuck responds, “The only things that shouldn't be stripped in the strip-o-later is a mirror (unless you want a window), and some plastics.”

Dolly strips most items in less than an hour, and will not bleach, raise the grain of wood, or ruin glue joints or veneers, and no neutralizing is required. The specially formulated chemical also creates a few extra benefits as it cleans and sterilizes the wood, which makes re-finishing easier and safer for stored items that may be rodent infested, fire or smoke damaged, or items from sick rooms. Metal beds/chairs, veneer, brass, silver, copper, leather, cane, wicker, mill-work, doors, leaded glass, concrete, even plaster-of-paris, have all been stripped by Dolly, the amazing strip-o-later.

Chuck doesn't hesitate to let Dolly strip everything from the finest antique veneers to motorcycles, but Dolly can't compete with JoHanna, a very talented seamstress and upholsterer who can sew anything from leather to lace.

The couple met in 1989 while living in Laughlin, Nevada, married, and the following year relocated to New Mexico. By September 2003, they opened Furniture Facelifts at Finish Line Antiques along the Old Santa Fe Trail in Raton. JoHanna's talents are displayed throughout the little shop: custom sewing and upholstery, crocheted afghans, quilts, pillows, footstools, painted furniture, re-caned chairs, one-of-a-kind functional and non-functional accessories, slipcovers, costumes, uniform alterations, emblem patches on leather or fabric, carhart repairs, etc. Stop by to see the high-tech stripper in action or peruse the unique shop.
