Business Spotlight: Raton
Building Community

The roots of RBS True Value run deep in Raton, spanning 83 years of business and three generations of family service. Its history started long before the doors first opened in 1945. Its founder, Carmon York Allen, was born in Johnson City, Tennessee in 1898 and moved west to visit relatives in 1921. Originally, Carmon planned only to visit while on his way west to the coast. After arriving in Raton, he discovered his uncle needed help at his building materials store, so he stayed on. This decision started what is known today as RBS True Value Building Material.

Eventually Carmon married a Kentucky woman living in Raton and together they had two children, Robert and Joan. After World War II, Robert graduated from Denver University with a degree in Building Material Business and became a partner in his father's business in 1945, then called Raton Builders Supply. Carmon lived to be 93 and never did retire. Robert managed operations until 1991, then retired after 46 years.
Since then, the responsibility to carry on the family legacy passed to Bill and Dani Allen and their two children who continue to improve their business and the community. Bill continues the operation as a True Value Store and oversaw the expansion into Angel Fire with a fully-stocked building materials store, but later changed the name to RBS True Value.
If you’re involved in a remodeling project, stop by to find product brands: Marvin and BetterBilt Windows, Benjamin Moore and True Value Paints, De Walt, Makita, and Milwaukee tools, or Prestige brand wood kitchen and bath cabinets, Thurmatru and Simpson doors, and all your basic plumbing and electrical supplies. Full-scale projects include engineered framing components, Simpson metal hangers, ABC metal roofing products, Tamkco, Owens Corning, and Elk brand shingle roofing. For three generations now, the Allens have practiced a successful business model of service, products and pricing, realizing their success is a function of customer satisfaction just like it was 83 years ago.
