Back in the Saddle Again

Custom saddle/repair shop and cowboy collectibles store called Strawberry Roan Saddle Company has opened at 1440 S. 2nd in Raton. Owner Bub Warren asks, “Why did I choose to live and work in Raton? I think a lot in part to familiarity. I have been around northeastern New Mexico many times and have always been impressed with the Comanche National Grasslands as they ease up the front range of the Sangre de Cristo mountains as well as the clean air, water, and the friendly folks. It’s apparent that northeastern New Mexico and southeastern Colorado offer a lifestyle unlike other parts of the country. With the wide expanses, large ranches, real cowboys and others who enjoy horses and riding, it seemed like a natural place to establish a quality saddle store.” Love for this work is the driving force behind his dedication and perseverance. Warren brought his original western art, bronzes, Native American beadwork and lots of smaller cowboy collectibles, creating an ambiance similar to art galleries. But Bub has been making custom saddles and designing custom leatherwork for 32 years, learning his trade under the tutelage of two masters in the saddle trade. His work has been shown at the Smithsonian; also rodeo cowboys have won his saddles at the Pendleton Roundup, and the state of Oklahoma commissioned him to design and build the “Diamond Jubilee Saddle”. “Reputations are made and only survive with your last project, so I take pride by competing with myself and my last saddle.” Today, riders and collectors all over the world recognize the museum quality of original Bub Warren leatherwork.

Each piece reflects the hand, eye, and heart of the artist while he continues to evolve by making that elusive “perfect saddle”. Custom work is his emphasis in his saddle shop; however, Bub also carries an inventory to purchase or he can order items to suit a customer’s needs. “Welcome home! That pretty much describes the way I feel. It’s my hope to become acquainted, say hello to folks who will tell their friends what they saw and how they feel. It is my pleasure to serve you if I can.”
